Vezio castle - Lombardia
The origins of this castle built close to lake of Como, are not so precise, but experts say they could date back to the Roman era. First written evidence dates back to year 1559 when the writer Paolo Giovio told that due to the war in year 1169 between Como and Comacina island some exiles went to castle of Vezio.
The tower that can be visited nowadays, once belonged to a larger defensive structure. It is located above the Lecco shore where there is the hamlet of Varenna, one of the pearls of the lake which is nothing short of extraordinary. In this way from the tower it was possible to control the ships coming or going from the north.
At any rate the tower is encompassed by defensive walls which have a turret in one of their corners, where the soldiers on guard could rest and check the ground below. The main tower is nowadays visitable by entering through a little gate across a wooden bridge.
Inside the main tower there is a small wooden staircase which, going through the floors of the building, reaches the top, where an unbelievable landscape can be observed.
Here you can enjoy the view of the lake with its mountainous shores and of the hamlet of Varenna, which is absolutely worth visiting. This area of the lake where the Vezio’s tower stands out, is characterized by the presence of several olive trees and beautiful nature. Strolling through this area will be an experience which will remain in your heart forever !
