Varese Ligure - Liguria
Val di Vara is a valley located in the Lunigiana land across Liguria, Toscana and Emilia Romagna regions. The upper part of this valley – called Alta Val di Vara – is truly beautiful and savage, completely covered by forests and characterized by little but wonderful hamlets.
The Vara river flows along Val di Vara and after a long trip it meets the greater Magra river which then dives into the sea. The river also runs through Varese Ligure a little hamlet of Lunigiana land.
The first evidences of Varese Ligure date back to the end of XIII century. It was built and dominated by the powerful family Fieschi and its position in Alta Val di Vara was so important because it was crossed by one of the main roads which joined Padana lowland (also known as Po valley) with the Liguria sea.
Strolling along Varese Ligure immersed in a pristine nature, is a truly pleasure. You can walk along little alleys and visit the major square of the hamlet, characterized by the presence of a little castle. This castle had defensive purposes and it is called Castello Fieschi. The castle can be visited and it is characterized by the presence of two towers.
Last but not least the church of San Filippo Neri is worth visiting. It dates back to XVII century and it is part of a cloistered convent. This church is characterized by a façade with two bell towers and is in baroque style.
