Varenna - Lombardia
On shores of lake of Como and Lecco, in Lombardia region and also known as Lario, there are awesome villages and one of them is undoubtedly Varenna. This hamlet is located on the Lecco side of Lario, exactly in front of Bellagio, another jewel of the Italian lake.
The origins of Varenna date back to the Gallic era. Its urban structure was updated during the Roman period, and of course in the Middle Ages it was conquered and dominated by several and powerful families.
Over the centuries Verenna was transformed into one of the most beautiful hamlets on lake Lario, with its alleys, little squares and tiny shops selling foods and local handicraft.
We of BBofItaly suggest to visit the Lario hamlet preferably during spring or autumn season when colours of nature are fantastic and there is no crowd. Strolling along Varenna, watching its beauty, is very relaxing and an unforgettable experience.
There is a path that runs from the little harbour to the central part of the hamlet. This path stretches along the lake and from the harbour you can take boats for unforgettable sightseen on the lake.
Don’t miss to visit Chiesa di San Giorgio in Varenna. This religious building dates back to XIII century and it is a clear example of Gothic architecture of Lombardo Medieval period. Inside the church very important frescoes can be observed.
