Valvarrone

In the northern part of Lombardia region, there is a very long and narrow valley, that winds from Pizzo dei Tre Signori range to Como lake. This valley is named Valvarrone and it is one of a kind !

Pizzo dei Tre Signori is a rocky range located in an area of prealps of Lombardia region, named Orobie. This range is characterized by three rocky peaks, named Pizzo Varrone, Pizzo di Trona and Pizzo dei Tre Signori (the highest).

The last part of Valvarrone, which winds from Premana village to Pizzo dei Tre Signori range is really gorgeous. In ancient years the stretch of this valley from Premana village to Bocchetta di Trona (Trona pass) was characterized by the presence of Via del Ferro (Iron Path), since there were some iron mines and furthermore this path was an important communication route between the lake and Val Gerola, a lateral valley of the main Valtellina.

During the First World War, Via del Ferro was embedded in the so called Linea Cadorna, a system of dirt roads and fortresses built in the area of the border between Switzerland and Italy, used in case the enemy exploited this area to conquer the territories of northern Italy.

Some parts of these dirt roads included Via del Ferro, are nowadays still in good conditions but of course they are closed to the off road vehicles. Our hiking experience takes palace along Via del Ferro, therefore from the lower part of Premana to Bocchetta di Trona and from there to FALC shelter through a challenging path equipped with chains for safety in its most dangerous sections.

We could therefore say that the path of our hiking was not difficult except the last challenging part to FALC shelter, but it was very long (22 km there and back), and with an altitude difference of 1400 meters.

The pristine environment and landscapes are gorgeous especially after the Forni hamlet which is located in the first stretch of dirt road. Then when you get the last part of Valvarrone, where you can stop for a bit of rest at Casera Vecchia di Varrone shelter, the view of rocky Pizzo Varrone is truly breathtaking.

From this point the Trona pass can be easily reached and then with due attention you get the FALC shelter. This building is located exactly under Pizzo Varrone end from here you can easily observe Pizzo dei Tre Signori, and Lago d’Inferno with Pizzo di Trona a remote and incredible rocky area !
