Val Garzelli - Alpe Campo

Val Garzelli is a tiny but unbelievable lateral valley of the major Val Bodengo, located in Lombardia region close to the Switzerland border. The forehead of Val Garzelli is awesome. It is a large flat meadow encompassed by a semicircle of rocky peaks with vertical, tormented walls.

The view is fantastic, it seems you are in another and lonely world with impenetrable borders and therefore completely isolated from the rest of the humanity except for a few ancient shelter used in the past by shepherds which exploited this area for their herd during the summer.

These shelters have been used until 1970s then areas like that were slowly abandoned, and nowadays some of these few shelters have been refurbished by locals, and used by them only a few weeks during the summer. Therefore you never find tourists. Furthermore during the rest of the year Val Garzelli is completely abandoned, and you can walk for hours without finding anyone !

Getting to Val Garzelli is not that easy because the valley is not visible from Val Bodengo. You have to leave the car in a small park in an area of Val Bodengo called Pra Pincee. At this point a very little path starts and runs inside Val Garzelli.

The first part of the path is flat and here you can see a big jump with a waterfall that closes the valley, and from this point it is impossible to see the forehead of the narrow Val Garzelli.

On the left hand side of the valley there is a big vertical rocky wall, called Caduta dei Giganti that is English means Fall of Giants. The origin of this strange name comes from the big pine trees that stand at the edge of this wall, and it seems they are falling down.

Path goes under Caduta dei Giganti and from this point it starts to be very steep, climbing on the flank of the valley into the forest. A very hard path indeed !

You walk with big effort and never see the end, but suddenly the forest ends and in front of you there is an unbelievable landscape. Eventually you got Alpe Campo and the forehead of Val Garzelli !

But now we leave the pictures here below to describe the beauty of this land. Some of them were taken during the spring when snow was still present.
