Val di Rhemes by winter - Valle D'Aosta
Valle d’Aosta is a north – western Italian region, its main valley stretches from east to west where Monte Bianco range is located. This valley runs through the middle of the region and below it along the southern direction, there are some gorgeous minor valleys. One of them is Val di Rhemes close at its end by the French border.
The road to get this wonderful valley starts from a village called Introd, located on the flank of the main valley. Last village you meet in Val di Rhemes is Rhemes Notre Dame, a beautiful tiny hamlet but the road continues reaching a place called Thumel where there is a car parking. From this point begins the path that runs inside the last very long part of the valley.
During the winter this last part of the road is closed due to snow. So if you want to get Thumel you have to use snowshoes. Walking up in this white environment is a fantastic experience. You are completely immersed in the silent of a sleeping nature.
No sound from frozen water in streams and waterfalls, no birds in the sky and animals in meadows, just silence broken by the wind. Maybe you could come across wolves, chasing for some ibex weakened by low temperature and absence of grass. Wolf is back in Valle d’Aosta since some years.
But walking in this pristine area you have to pay close attention to avalanches. In these minor valleys snow is very heavy, and walking on paths is very dangerous because a huge amount of snow falls from the very steep and high slopes of mountains. So before to explore this area, always ask to locals and mountain guides, what is the safest path and the best time.
