In Veneto region – Vicenza district – there is a village named Marostica, characterized by the presence of two castles and long defensive walls. One of these castles, called lower castle, is encompassed by the houses of the village.

The second one –  upper castle – is located on top of a hill near the village. This hill is named Pausolino. The two buildings are joined by a 1800 meters long defensive walls with battlements.

The village of Marostica is also characterized by a large square called Piazza degli Scacchi – Chess square – where a “living chess game” take place every year. The inhabitants of the village are deeply involved in this game and some of them play the role of each chess piece wearing gorgeous costumes.
