Sovana - Maremma
Sovana is a village in Maremma –Toscana region – that has something mystic and mysterious. Its origins come from Etruschi era and its buildings are mainly made by tufo rocks.
The hamlet is tiny but still well conserved and as said, its story starts with Etruschi people and of course goes through the Roman empire era, Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Sovana has only one main road named Via del Pretorio that ends in Piazza del Pretorio where Palazzo dell’Archivio (XII century), Chiesa di Santa Maria (late Romanesque period) and Palazzo del Pretorio (XIII century) can be found. Piazza del Pretorio is also characterized by a well conserved herringbone bricks flooring.
Close to Chiesa di Santa Maria is located the Etrusco museum (San Mamiliano museum), where a lot of daily life objects of this mysterious people can be observed.
At the end of Via di Mezzo that starts from Piazza del Pretorio, Duomo di Sovana – Cattedrale dei santi Pietro e Paolo – is located. This building is dated around VIII century and it is one of the most important Gothic Romanesque style church in Toscana region. Let’s say that it is fantastic also because inside the building a mystic atmosphere can be clearly felt !
