Santarcangelo and its castle - Emilia Romagna
In Romagna part of Emilia Romagna region, close to Rimini district, there is a hamlet named Santarcangelo and its origins date back to the medieval period. This wonderful hamlet is characterized by the presence of a castle.
The particularity of this castle is that it is still inhabited, therefore perfectly restored and maintained, furthermore its rooms still have a lot of furniture and for this reasons it is nothing short of remarkable.
First evidences of this castle date back to IX century and during the period between year 1295 and year 1500 it was under the dominion of the powerful Malatesta family. Then Santarcangelo castle passed from hand to hand and nowadays it belongs to the Princess Marina Colonna di Paliano.
So if you want to step back in time, a visit to this castle is a must. You can feel the medieval ambience and the harsh beauty of this building. Its rooms are still fantastic and also the basements are well conserved. It also shares with the castle of Gradara the legend of Paolo and Francesca, the two characters described in Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri.
Strolling around the ancient part of Santarcangelo hamlet is a great pleasure. You can enjoy small alleys with very old houses and also the bell tower built in the year 1893 on the remains of an old tower.
Nothing short of remarkable, is also the tiny museum of buttons for dresses (il Museo del Bottone di Santarcangelo) where it is possible to observe a fantastic collection that represents the evolution of this object over the years also from an artistic point of view.
