Isola d'Elba
Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato
The sanctuary of Monserrato is located in a valley of Monte Castello, about 3 kilometers from Porto Azzurro on Isola d’Elba.
It was built in 1606 by José Pons y León, of the Dukes of Arcos, Spanish governor of Naples.
The story tells that, while the governor was sailing along the Tyrrhenian coast, he was surprised by a sudden storm that forced him to make a makeshift docking in the Gulf of Porto Lognone. In gratitude to Nuestra Señora di Montsérrat (Our Lady of Monteserrato) who begged to relieve it from the storm, he had the sanctuary built, dedicated to the Madonna of Monserrato. This sanctuary is inspired by the namesake located in Catalonia.
In the 17th and 18th centuries the sanctuary was the destination of numerous pilgrims and in 1814 Napoleon visited it. Subsequently the monastery was slowly abandoned by the monks who resided there and fell into decline. To date, the sanctuary has been reopened to allow you to admire what remains and it is also possible to visit it internally by finding furnishings and objects from the 1600s.
From the front of the sanctuary it is possible to see the valley that opens onto the Gulf of Porto Lognone giving great emotions. In the rear part of the sanctuary it is still possible to see the remains of the open aqueduct that carried water from inside the mountain to the sanctuary itself.
