San Pietro Island - Sardegna
San Pietro Island is situated near the south western Sardinia coast and connected with it thank to a ferry service from Carloforte to Portovesme. This is a not a well known island, which makes it even more interesting and beautiful, especially if you like uncrowded places.
It has a volcanic origin and very particular morphological characteristics, with jagged cliffs, clear water, hidden coves, mediterranean greenery and sea stacks. The only village in this small island is Carloforte, most of its inhabitants are fishermen indeed San Pietro is very famous for the red tuna fishing, the best type of tuna in the entire world and also a rare one! Obviously, the local gastronomy revolves around fish, especially red tuna, couscous, pesto, white wine as Vermentino DOC or Cannonau DOC and so on!
BBOI’s team suggest you to spend at least one week in this amazing island since it has lots to offer: small coves, breathtaking sunsets, good restaurants, high cliffs for diving, clear sea for snorkeling and paths in the greenery for relaxing walks.
As you can see in the photos, BBOI’s team went to explore the most famous places in San Pietro Island: Capo Sandalo, Cala Geniò and Le Colonne. Capo Sandalo is the westernmost extremity of Italy and it’s dominated by a nineteenth-century lighthouse with an height of 138 mt, here you can enjoy a stunning view of the sea with its trasparent colour and a stroll among the cliffs.
Cala Geniò is characterized by sandy and rocky beaches and by two sea stacks almost pink. Here it is possible to do some snorkeling and to visit a small cave near the beach, the seabed is very shallow so it’s suitable also for children. Another unique feauture of this cave is the presence of pink clay, perfect for your skin as scrub!
Le Colonne means literally The Pillars since they are two grey natural sea stacks shaped by wind and sea, the legend has it that the Apostle Pietro turned two sea monsters into rock in order to protect the island, another one tells that a divine punishment turned two sailors into stone.
