Rocca dei Veneziani and Clock Tower
The Rocca di Brisighella was built at the beginning of the 14th century and subsequently restored in 1457 by Astorgio Manfredi and between 1504 and 1508 by Veneziani. It stands on one of the three rocky hills that surround the village of Brisighella and is composed of a 16th century tower (the “Tower of Veneziani“) and an ancient smaller tower dating back to 1300. The walls, which are connected to the towers , surround a large internal courtyard which has a trapezoidal shape.
Inside the towers there are exhibition spaces that trace the various eras of the Vena del Gesso between Prehistory and the Middle Ages. The Rocca is in fact located in the Regional Park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola.
During the visit to the Rocca dei Veneziani you walk along the walkways of the walls, where it is possible to stop and admire a unique panorama of the village and the plain. Looking south-east, it is possible to clearly see the Clock Tower, which can be reached along a short dirt road that starts outside the walls of the Rocca.
The Brisighella Clock Tower stands on a second rocky hill that surrounds the village of Brisighella. The fortification was built in 1290 by Maghinardo Pagani da Susinana, a famous warlord from Romagna, with the aim of having a broad vision and control over the territory. Together with the Rocca dei Veneziani, it constituted the defensive system of the inhabited center.
Over time it was damaged and restored several times, but in 1850 it was completely rebuilt. In these years the clock with the 6-hour dial was added: in Italy, in those days, it was the time system used.
It is not possible to visit the inside of the Clock Tower, but from its terraces you can enjoy an excellent view of the village of Brisighella, the Rocca dei Veneziani and the gullies, a formation of blue clays, over time washed away by atmospheric agents.
