Porto Venere – Liguria

Porto Venere - Liguria

Porto Venere is one of the most beautiful hamlet in La Spezia district – Liguria region. It is located on the tip of the peninsula which makes Golfo della Spezia known also as Golfo dei Poeti (gulf of poets) for its beauty. It seems that the origins of Porto Venere date back to VI century B.C. but first written evidences come from year 161 A.C..

In Porto Venere there is the oldest church of Golfo dei Poeti called Chiesa di San Pietro. It has an awesome position and dates back to V century. It has been updated over the years and now has a very simple Gothic architecture and the same is the interior of the church. Chiesa di San Pietro is awesome and when you are there you can feel an indescribable atmosphere !

During the Middle Ages Porto Venere was under the domain of the powerful Vezzano family and then under the domain of Repubblica di Genova. For this reason and the particular position of Porto Venere, in the hamlet was built Castello Doria. This castle has not a precise date of construction, and its first written records date back to year 1139, when Castello Doria come under the domain of Repubblica di Genova. The position of this castle hanging on a cliff above the sea, is unbelievable !
