Porto Ercole - Argentario Toscana
Porto Ercole is a hamlet located in Promontorio dell’Argentario (a mountainous peninsula) which belongs to Maremma land – southern part of Toscana region. Monte Telegrafo with its 635 meters of altitude is in Promontorio dell’Argentario.
This gorgeous land is completely covered by forests, which creates a strong contrast with the blue sea. Porto Ercole is embedded in this unique paradise with its little harbour.
First evidences of Porto Ercole date back to Etruschi period and during medieval period the hamlet was dominated by Aldobrandeschi and Orsini powerful families. Then it was contended by France and Spain and it had its heyday under the Spanish domain.
Over the centuries Porto Ercole has had several castles, towers and fortresses some of them destroyed. Nowadays Forte Filippo and Rocca Aldobrandesca – also known as Rocca Spagnola – are still present.
Porto Ercole also knew one of the greatest Italian painter called Michelangelo Merisi (Caravaggio as nickname) who died in the hamlet on 18th of July 1610.
