Pontremoli - Lunigiana
Lunigiana is a land in the Toscana region, closed among Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Garfagnana, this last one always in Toscana. So it could be said that Lunigiana is a border land and, as always happens, these kind of sites are not so famous, but for this reason Lunigiana is a fantastic part of Italy to be discovered.
Pontremoli is a Lunigiana village located on the road that goes through Passo della Cisa along Valle del Magra with its Fiume Magra. This hamlet is worth to visit especially for its well-restored and maintained castle. Furthermore, this building is now the place where the show Statue Stele della Lunigiana is hosted.
Before starting with the description of Pontremoli and its castle, it is necessary to highlight the fantastic B&B where you can spend some nights while visiting the hamlet. Its name is Il giardino di rosmarino. It was born from the ruins of an old farm, so it is merged in a deep and silent forest, but Il giardino di rosmarino is not so far from Pontremoli, and it also has a big swimming pool and comfortable rooms, moreover a fantastic breakfast is served !
Coming back to Pontremoli, as said before, in its castle it is present the Statue Stele della Lunigiana show. These are sculptures that come from an ancient period (between 1000 and 3000 years B.C.), but their origin and the involved population history are still a mystery, even if archaeologists are still working to discover the habits of those people and the exact meaning of Statue Stele.
Pontremoli castle, also named as Castello del Piagnaro, is located on the top of a hill and dominates the hamlet and the road to get Passo della Cisa. For this reason in the past that was a strategic position. It has been completely restored and is well-preserved. The first ancient documents about it date back to the year 1260, and of course, during the following centuries its structure was modified and updated to fulfil the needs of the powerful families, which had been owners of the building for years.
It must be highlighted that Statue Stele della Lunigiana, hosted in Castello del Piagnaro, creates a deep and unbelievable feeling of mystery that surrounds these ancient and impenetrable sculptures.
