Pomonte wreck
The Pomonte wreck is located on the south-west side of the Elba island, near the beach of Pomonte, the place from which it takes its name. The wreck of Pomonte is, in reality, the Italian cargo ship Elviscot which sank on January 10, 1972.
The cargo was bound for Marseilles and departed from Naples. During her navigation, due to a human error, she violently hit the rock of the Ogliera and the hull reared up, remaining stranded.
The accident had no consequences for the crew who easily got to safety reaching the nearby beach.
Subsequently the hull was partially recovered, while the stern, the bridge and the foreside sank completely and now lie on a seabed of just 12 meters deep.
The wreck can be easily visited even in apnea and is the destination of many tourists and boats that stop nearby.
Already clearly visible from the surface with the use of a simple mask, the Pomonte wreck is of sure impact and allows anyone to be able to see up close the plates of the Elviscot cargo and the marine life that surrounds it.
