Pitigliano is a hamlet with Etrusche origins, and it has two major characteristics: it has been built on cliff of Tufo rocks and during XVI centuries it was populated by a big Jewish community. For this last reason Pitigliano was also named “little Jerusalem”.
The hamlet stayed unspoiled during centuries and for this reason it is absolutely worth to visit Pitigliano also because its skyline at night is incredible !
First written evidences of the hamlet come from XI century, hence in the first medieval period. It was mainly dominated by two very powerful family: Aldobrandeschi and Orsini and after this period it was under the domain of Ducato di Toscana and afterwards the domain of Regno d’Italia.
Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is the major catholic church in Pitigliano. It was refurbished by Orsini family and it is a Romanesque monument but in some parts modified as Baroque during years.
Chiesa di San Rocco is the oldest church in Pitigliano. Its origins date back XII centuries and it was refurbished by Orsini family during the end of XV century. It shows some details of late Renaissance architecture like its facade.
Of course the gastronomy is a must in Maremma as well in Pitigliano. Cured meat and others several dishes based on boar meat are very popular, and absolutely they cannot be missed ! Better if tasted with a wonderful local red bottle of wine.
