Penne - Abruzzo
In Pescara district – Abruzzo region – there is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, called Penne. It dates back to the pre-Romanesque era and its first buildings with defensive purpose were located on the top of a hill.
For this reason the village was named “Pinna” which means “Sharp” in the Latin language of the time. Over the centuries the name Pinna was transformed into Penne still used nowadays. But Penne is also known as the “brick town” because most of the ancient buildings were built with red bricks.
The geographical position of this village is fantastic because it is located halfway between the Gran Sasso rocky massif, the Maiella massif and the Adriatico sea. These means a climate not so cold in the winter season and not so hot in the summer season. A perfect climate !
The Gran Sasso massif – 2912 meters high – is very rocky and encompassed by a fantastic natural park characterized by the presence of bears and wolves. Therefore BBofItaly warmly suggest you visit this unforgettable area.
The highest top – 2795 meters – of the Maiella massif is called Monte Amaro. Also in this case the mountain is encompassed by a natural park which is home to several species of wild animals including bears and wolves as in the Gran Sasso area.
Strolling along the alleys of Penne is always a great pleasure. You can enjoy discovering wonderful corners of this village and also tiny shops with handicraft and local food and wine. As for local food, the so famous Tartufo is worth mentioning.
But if you prefer to spend some time surrounded by a fantastic nature, you should visit the lake of Penne. This is a dam with an artificial lake, immersed in a wonderful green land, and of course in this area you can go hiking and even fishing, for unforgettable moments of relaxation.
