Orta San Giulio - Isola di San Giulio
Orta San Giulio and Isola di San Giulio are located on Lago d’Orta in the Piemonte region. North of this lake there is the Switzerland border, east there is Lago Maggiore and west there is Monte Rosa (4634 meters – this huge mountain with its glaciers can be seen on the road to get the Lago d’Orta from south, of course if the sky is clean). Orta San Giulio, a tiny and gorgeous village on the shore of the lake, and Isola di San Giulio, a fantastic little land, are very close. So their story has had the same destiny, that means they were dominated by the power of Catholic Church and by several powerful families during the Middle Ages. Now Orta San Giulio and its Isola di San Giulio are two gorgeous sites, with ancient buildings and alleys completely restored. So absolutely it is worth to visit them. Because of the Catholic Church domain in the medieval period, Isola di San Giulio is still characterized by the presence of Abbazia Mater Ecclesiae nowadays managed by Benedictine nuns.
