Monte Rosso di Vertosan - Valle D'Aosta
We did it ! Yes we got the top of Monte Rosso di Vertosan 2943 meters high ! This has been an exciting hike. Monte Rosso di Vertosan is in Valle d’Aosta region, close to Punta Leysser another goal of BBofItaly.it and is located on the watershed between Vetan side and Vallone di Vertosan, a large side valley of Valle del Gran San Bernardo. The latter runs to the border with the France part of Switzerland and Vetan is a tiny hamlet 1800 meters high.
Therefore starting from the hamlet and climbing to the top of Monte Rosso di Vertosan, you must overcome 1143 meters in altitude. When we at BBofItaly.it went up to Punta Leysser (2771 meters high), we thought we could cross the ridge that divides Punta Leysser and Monte Rosso di Vertosan, passing through Passo Paletta.
But the ridge was too dangerous, a climbing affair and not just only a tough hike ! The rocky ridge has very steep flanks with deep overhangs, so better to attempt the Monte Rosso di Vertosan from its normal route.
The normal route starts from the path that climbs to Rifugio Fallere, a shelter located in a fantastic little valley dominated by Mont Fallere (3061 meters high). The first part crosses fantastic meadows with streams and blooms of coloured flowers. While you are walking in this Heaven, Monte Rosso di Vertosan is exactly in front of you, and on your left there is Passo Paletta and Punta Leysser.
Then you have to leave this very relaxing path that runs to Passo Paletta, and start to climb a very high spur. The path is never difficult but in some parts it is overhanging, so you must pay close attention. This path arrives to the final very steep ridge that without any kind of difficulties climbs to the top of Monte Rosso di Vertosan with huge overhanging flanks.
On the top you will find a small wooden cross, and an awesome landscape. Furthermore during the day we had this adventure, the sky was deep blue with no clouds, so the view of the highest mountains (Mont Blanc, Punta Walker of Grand Jorasses, Grand Combin, Monte Rosa) was unbelievable. An experience that you cannot miss at all !
