Modica - Sicilia
Modica represents the “universe” of the Sicilia region very well. It is a sparkling little city full of people and tourists who stroll along its streets and alleys that also stretch on the hills.
It is characterized by tiny shops and pastry shops where you can taste the best local sweets such as the typical Cannoli, Cassata, Granita, or even Brioscia cu’ Tuppu (a croissant stuffed with ice-cream). Unbelievable!
Don’t miss to visit the chocolate laboratory named Bonajuto, where you can taste and buy one of the best chocolates in the world. This experience will be unforgettable for your palate!
We of BBofItaly also had the opportunity to observe a woman, who was approaching one of the most important moments of her life, the wedding day. This type of ceremony is very heartfelt by the Siciliani also from the social point of view of the city. So the wedding is such a wonderful event in this Italian region.
The woman had a fantastic dress with a very long veil and many citizens watched her going up the imposing staircase of the Duomo di San Giorgio. A fascinating scene that allows you to understand the tradition and culture of these people!
The origins of Modica date back to the Neolithic era, but were destroyed by a violent earthquake in the year 1693. Later Modica was completely rebuilt and today it is a clear example of Baroque architecture.
We suggest you to visit at least the following Baroque churches: Duomo di San Pietro and Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista, this last one built on the top of the highest hill of Modica.
Furthermore, you must visit Castello dei Conti di Modica with its Torretta dell’Orologio. This castle was completely destroyed by the earthquake and was rebuilt as an orphanage, but from its walls you can enjoy a gorgeous view of Modica, especially at night.
