Portofino Promontory
L'altare dive
The Portofino promontory offer some of the most magnificent diving sites of Italy. Some of the sites are situated in a protected marine park area that permit to preserve the marine species and always offer a spectacular views.
The altar (or altar tip) is a dive that owes its name to a square-shaped rock that sits just above the surface of the sea, in front of the dive buoy.
The dive is characterized by a vertical wall in the shape of an amphitheater that goes down in depth (over 40 meters). The dive begins with the exploration of a slightly steep plateau at a depth of about 20 meters where it is possible to find numerous gorgonians, surrounded by banks of red damselfish. Going deeper, on the vertical wall, the gorgonians disappear and it is possible to admire branches of red coral. This colony of red coral is the most important in the entire marine protected area of the Portofino Promontory.
In this dive it is possible to find a great variety of marine species such as large groupers, damselfish, moray eels, snappers, salpe, corvine and many others
It is certainly a suggestive dive, both for the underwater landscape it offers, and for the variety of marine species that can be admired.
