From Lago di Gioveretto to Lago Verde - Val Martello
Val Martello is a valley located in Bolzano district – Trentino Alto Adige region. It is a side valley of the most important Val Venosta. It starts from Morter hamlet and is 30 kilometres long.
The first part (the lower one) of Val Martello is also famous for its cultivation of strawberries, the highest in Europe. Here the climate is dry and mild and it is favourable for this kind of plant.
At the end of the valley you can find the Gioveretto lake. This is a beautiful artificial lake – a dam – encompassed by a fantastic environment encompassed by Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio (Stelvio National Park).
Val Martello is dominated by Monte Cevedale (3769 meters high) where there are numerous glaciers, and on the orographic right hand side of the valley runs the Gioveretto stream which plunges into the Gioveretto lake.
The path to Lago Verde starts from Lago di Gioveretto, following the Gioveretto stream. Lago Verde has glacial origins and it is immersed in an awesome environment, where it is possible to observe the small Ghiacciaio di Lorchen located under the Cima Lorchen (3347 meters high).
The path is not so difficult but in some of its parts it climbs steeply. At the end it enters in a little valley where Lago Verde is located. The landscape is harsh but fantastic, with a lot of gravel and rocks left by the glaciers shrinkage.
The colour of the lake water is emerald green, very common when the source of this water is a glacier, so the environment is unbelievable. It will definitely make you beside yourself !
