Soave is a village located in Valpolicella, a land nearby Lago del Garda – Garda lake. This land stretches along the foot of Monti Lessini – Lessini mountains – the mountain range behind which there are the Alps of Veneto region, characterized by the presence of the gorgeous groups of Dolomiti del Brenta and Adamello.
People of Valpolicella, with hard work, have shaped the environment over the centuries, creating something truly special. History and art represent the uniqueness of this land, famous also for its tasty gastronomy and for three main types of wine, a white called Soave, a red called Valpolicella and another red called Amarone.
We have had the opportunity and pleasure of tasting these wines at Cantina del Castello. This winery is truly beautiful. Here you can find ancient cellars perfectly integrated with modern spaces creating a unique ambience where you can enjoy your wine tasting experience accompanied by local cured meats.
We started tasting Soave, a white wine with a delicate flavour. Then we had Valpolicella Ripasso, a red wine with a firm flavour. Finally it was the turn of Amarone, a red and unique wine with special flavours, to be tasted in the evening in front of the fireplace while chatting with best friends. You will surely fall in love with it !
About gastronomy there are several local dishes that can be mentioned, but one is really famous and is called Bigoli. This is a sort of pasta quite similar to Spaghetti, but with a greater thickness and a hole inside. You can taste this dish at the Bigoleria alla Rocca, a restaurant specialized in recipes with Bigoli dressed using different condiments and where of course you can also enjoy local wine like a red Valpolicella. We tasted Bigoli with three different condiments:
- Acciughe, vino bianco, olive nere – Anchovies, white wine, black olives
- Gorgonzola, Radicchio, prosciutto crudo, noci – Gorgonzola (special type of cheese), Radicchio (special type of vegetable), raw ham, walnuts
- Pistacchi, Mascarpone, Speck – Pistachios, Mascarpone (special type of cheese), Speck (special type of ham)
We would like to point out also two types of desserts prepared by Bigoleria alla Rocca. One is named Salame al Cioccolato, the other is nicknamed La Sporcacciona. Salame al Cioccolato has the shape of the so famous salami cured meat, but is made with chocolate and butter. La Sporcacciona – the “dirty” cake – is like the so famous Sacher but super-loaded with chocolate. Something that leaves an indelible flavour on your palate !
So if you are in the Soave area, don’t miss a visit to the Cantina del Castello and Bigoleria alla Rocca.
