Ivrea - Pavone Canavese - Masino
Canavese Land of Castles
Canavese is a land positioned in Piemonte region. Precisely it is more or less where there was the Balteo ancient glacier, an incredible huge amount of ice that came down from Valle D’Aosta. So part of Canavese and Ivrea (one of its villages) are exactly in front of the “door” to Valle D’Aosta. Because of this some castles are present in Canavese. They were used during Middle Ages, to control the paths to the more two important passes in Valle D’Aosta, one is Gran San Bernardo to get to the Switzerland, the other is Piccolo San Bernardo to get to France. We stopped firstly in Ivrea. This village has not a well conserved castle, so don’t waste your time to visit it. But you can find a famous pastry shop where you can taste a very special cake called “900” and believe this or not, it is patented ! There are two versions of this cake, a classic one with brown chocolate, and the white one done with white chocolate. Absolutely you cannot miss this cake. Then we visited the Pavone Canavese‘s castle well conserved where there is a fantastic hotel and restaurant. So you can sleep and have your dinner in castle rooms. Of course you will have the opportunity to taste very good italian food and wine. In the morning of the next day, we had the opportunity to visit a hold cars gathering where some very old Italian cars were shown. The name of this gathering was “Volanti Briglie Manubri“. In the afternoon we visited the Masino‘s castle. It was built during Middle Ages, but during 1700 and 1800, under the Savoia period, this castel was transformed in a holiday luxury site for nobility.
