Introd Castle - Valle D'Aosta
A valley of castles and huge mountains (the highest in Europe), this is Valle d’Aosta, a border land between France and Switzerland, which in the past needed a good network of defensive works for defensive purposes.
Introd is a fantastic village built on a spur between the natural gateway of Valle di Rhemes and Valsavarenche, and for this reason it was the ideal place for a castle with a good view and control over the valley bottom.
In the last period the castle was a private estate of Conti Caracciolo di Brienza, but it has been recently purchased by the regional administration. First evidence of the castle dates back to XII century and it was then update by Pierre Sarriod under the control of the powerful Bard family.
The building suffered two ruinous fires during the second half of the XIX century. It was then completely refurbished under the direction of architect Chevalley. The castle is characterized by the presence of a tower inside its walls.
In the building there is also a huge oven, used in the past also by inhabitants of the Introd village, mainly for baking bread. It should be noted that in ancient times, bread was made only with rye flour and baked only once a year. It was then dried and stored in safe rooms.
Another interesting building is located in the courtyard at the front of the castle. It was a granary which represent a typical example of the early Medieval period. It is perfectly preserved and protected by an additional roof.
