Gradara castle - Marche
Gradara and its castle is a must ! BBofItaly.it team warmly suggest you to visit this gorgeous Italian site.
The little medieval hamlet and its castle are located in Marche region, close to Urbino and Pesaro districts. The Gradara castle – called also Rocca di Gradara – dates back to 1150 year and it is perfectly conserved and maintained.
There is still a lot of furniture in its rooms and this is great because normally these types of castles have been plundered over the years. This building, mainly dominated by the powerful Malatesta family and then by the Sforza, is so important for the story of Paolo and Francesca, the two very famous characters described in Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri.
The legend tells that Dante Alighieri was hosted by Francesca’s parents who told the famous Italian poet the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, and it is well known that this story was magnificently reported in Divina Commedia.
The medieval hamlet of Gradara is enclosed within mighty walls that can be visited and offer a splendid view of the castle and the surrounding landscape.
We at BBofItaly.it thank Ms. Giovanna and her team for the fantastic opportunity they gave us with a unique and exclusive visit of the castle and its walls. It has been a blast ! This team can usually be found in the tourist info point office of Gradara hamlet, located close to the main gate of the walls – the so-called clock gate for its large clock.
Last but not least we want to quote the amazing Relais where we spent our nights and had super tasty breakfast in the morning. The name of this Relais is VillaFrancesca located in Via Fanano 42 – Gradara – and of course this wonderful tourist facility has also a big swimming pool surrounded by a beautiful garden with a gorgeous view of the castle. The BBofItaly.it team also thanks Mr. Ranieri and his wife for the warm welcome and for making our stay fantastic.
