Furlo Gorge - Marche
In the Urbino – Pesaro district (Marche region – central part of Italy), there is the Gola del Furlo (Furlo Gorge) a unique place from a naturalistic point of view that is worth visiting !
Its origins date back to two hundred millions years ago. Furthermore it is not only a drop dead gorgeous site but it is characterized also by important historical events.
The Candigliano river winds its way along this gorge, carving this magnificent site over the centuries mainly between two mountains: Monte Pietralta (889 meters high) and Monte Paganuccio (976 meters high).
In ancient period the Furlo Gorge was called Saxa Intercisa which means broken rocks. Etruscan were the first population to understand the importance of this site. For this reason they built a road to facilitate goods trade off among different villages located at the two ends of the gorge.
The Roman population called this road Flaminia and paved it. They also improved this so important communication route, building a tunnel and a place where the travellers and their horses could find some rest and refreshment. The road is nowadays still present, but used only by local traffic.
Furlo Gorge is encompassed in a natural park that is worth visiting, where you can observe several species of fauna and flora. Something that can make your day for its unique beauty.
