Ghiacciaio del Miage - Valle D'Aosta
If you are looking for a lonely and savage place you cannot miss Ghiacciaio del Miage – Valle d’Aosta region. This glacier is located in the south – Italian – part of Monte Bianco massif and it belongs to the family of the so-called black glaciers.
These kind of glaciers are covered with a layer of stones and gravel, so the white and blue of their ice cannot be seen. Black glaciers are present in different parts of the earth, such as the Himalaya one.
Ghiacciaio del Miage is generated by two huge glaciers that run down from Monte Bianco massif. One is known as Ghiacciaio di Bionassay and the other is called Ghiacciaio del Dome.
Ghiacciaio del Miage stretches out into a long and narrow valley with very high side peaks. Then at the end of this valley it bends rapidly into Val Veny where ends splitting in two branches.
Walking on a black glacier is a unique experience. You are not able to see if you are putting your feet on steady ground or if the ice is unstable under the layer of gravel and stones.
Somewhere you can see cracks, crevasses, where the ice is visible and when the sun and temperature rise, you can hear the noise of stones falling down into these cracks. For these reasons walking on a balck glacier requires a lot of attention !
The environment encompassing Ghiacciaio del Miage, is awesome. Lonely, harsh, where the nature shows all its power ! For sure this is an experience that will make you beside yourself and that you cannot miss.
