Gardetta upland - Piemonte
In Piemonte region there is a gorgeous valley named Val Maira. This truly wild land is closed on western side by the France border and on its southern flank there is an imaginable upland, called Gardetta.
This place extends more or less at an altitude of 2500 meters and it is dominated by a high (2831 meters) and very characteristic mountain called Rocca la Meja. If you see it from the Ancoccia pass (Colle d’Ancoccia – 2533 meters), it looks like a huge castle with several rocky pinnacles and towers. A gorgeous view !
Gardetta upland (Altopiano della Gardetta), has a particularity. During the first and second world war, army built a lot of dirt roads and fortresses because this land was on the border with France.
Nowadays these dirt roads are still well maintained. They wind through a fantastic environment surrounded by incredible nature and are normally used by cyclists. Of course there are also several paths that you can use for great hiking experiences.
Gardetta upland can be reached from several natural gates, but we at BBofItaly.it (Best and Beauty of Italy) suggest you to go up through the side Preit valley of the main Val Maira. This will allow you to be in the middle of the upland, with a great lateral view of Rocca la Meja.
