Frasassi Caves and surroundings - Marche
Grotte di Frasassi – Frasassi Caves – are located in Marche region – Ancona district – and they are a unique beauty in the world. Spending some time to visit this place is definitely a blast ! So don’t miss it.
The main cave was discovered in year 1971, when a bunch of young guys, climbing some walls of the surrounding mountains, found out a hole from which cold wind was blowing trough.
Below that hole there was an unbelievable underground world that the nature created over the millennia. The scenario is indescribable and the following photographs can give only a vague idea of this reality.
Stalagmites and stalactites, colours and shapes give you a feeling of an enchanted world !
Near the Frasassi Caves, the Eremo di Santa Maria Infra Saxa (Hermitage of Santa Maria Infra Saxa which dates back to the year 1029) and the small Tempio di Valadier (Valadier Temple built at the behest of Pope Leone XII in 1828) are worth a visit. This two buildings have been created inside a huge cave, and the view is really special and spectacular.
Last but not least, still close to Frasassi Caves, the Abbazia di (Abbey of) San Vittore delle Chiuse is worth a visit. It should date back to around year 1070 and is part of a Benedictine Monastery. It is in Romanesque style and therefore is simple and bare, but for this very reason it is wonderful.
While visiting Frasassi Caves, we at BBofItaly.it spent our stay at Castello di Monterado (Monterado Castle). It is an ancient building which dates back to around year 1500. Nowadays it has been transformed in a fantastic Residence, but still retains its own characteristics, so spending your time in this structure you feel like stepping back in time living in an enchanted reality. An experience not to be missed !
