Fraele Towers and Cancano lake
The Fraele towers are located at an altitude of 1930 meters in the homonymous valley (Valle di Fraele). They are accessible through a narrow and tortuous road from the town of Valdidentro located in the upper Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, not far from Bormio.
Built in 1391 they were large observation and signaling towers that were part of a bigger fortification, now no longer visible. Their function was to ensure safety in the crossing of the Passo di Fraele and to allow the signaling of dangers via signals with smoke (during the day) or luminous (at night).
Both the towers have a square plan and very thick walls: the western one, which is more than 10 meters high, still has a good state of conservation, the eastern one has many missing parts and cannot be visited.
Behind the towers the road leads into the Fraele Valley, which they defended in the past.
After skirting a small lake, the Cancano lakes appear before your eyes, an impressive engineering work dating back to 1922. These lakes are, in fact, of artificial origin: the first dam was built in 1922, while the second was started to build in 1939, but only finished in 1956 due to the Second World War.
The dams are built for the production of electricity in Lombardy and are supplied with water by the river Adda, whose sources are not far away.
A path of about 20Km allows you to make the tour of the 2 lakes on foot or by mountain bike . From the second dam (San Giacomo dam), a path begins that continues to Val Alpisella and reaches the sources of the Adda river. Continuing, the path allowed to reach the town of Livigno, the third highest town in Italy.
