Fortezza Maniace - Sicilia
On Ortigia, a little island very close to Siracusa city – Sicilia region – there is a fantastic fortress called Maniace. It was built for the defence of the city and its harbour and is located exactly in front of a gorgeous sea.
This building date back to the Greek era, and its name Maniace comes from Giorgio Maniace, a noble with Byzantium Empire origins. The most important parts of the fortress were built by the Emperor Frederik II of Sweden. In the year 2000 it has been refurbished and nowadays is used for some public events.
The structure of the building is really rugged and harsh for defensive reasons, but extremely beautiful. The original height of the defensive walls was 18 meters and their thickness was 3.5 meters. Very impressive dimensions !
On each of the four corners of the defensive walls, there is a circular tower, but despite the harsh architecture of the fortress, it is perfectly finished with particular attention and special materials.
The internal hall is really impressive. It features 24 vaults with fantastic arches. But what really astonishes is the position of the Maniace fortress facing the sea. This building immersed in a fantastic environment, will overwhelm you !
