Fortezza di San Leo - Emilia Romagna
In a wonderful green land called Valmarecchia in the Romagna side of Emilia Romagna region, there is the fantastic Fortezza di San Leo (San Leo fortress). The origin of this well preserved building dates back to the era of Roman Emperor.
In fact they perfectly understood how important was from a strategic point of view, the huge limestone spur with vertical faces where the fortress was built. For this reason the fortress was practically invincible.
Furthermore the massive structure of the fortress over the centuries was developed specifically for defence purposes. The building is characterized by two level: the first with the gothic entrance portal and big towers, the second with a fantastic weapons square. Fortezza di San Leo is really nothing short of remarkable !
The fortress was used as a prison since year 1631. Among the various prisoners, Cagliostro deserves a special mention. He was born in Palermo city in the year 1743 and was left an orphan.
At the age of thirteen he was in Fatebenefratelli convent located in Caltagirone city, where he began his studies about medicinal herbs. Cagliostro spent much of his life, traveling and had the opportunity to meet various people and nobles.
He became a trickster, convincing people that he worked miracles, even using also some special herbs. He also pretended to turn lead into gold. He was arrested and died in the year 1795 in the worst cell of San Leo Fortress.
