Etruobles - Valle D'Aosta
Etroubles is one of the most beautiful village located along the state road that goes from Aosta – the main town of Valle d’Aosta region – to Colle del Garn San Bernardo on the Switzerland border. This road runs through the fantastic Valle del Gran San Bernardo.
The village is exactly at halfway between Aosta and Colle del Gran San Bernardo. In the past the road was called Via Francigena, a very long ancient route still present which can be done on foot.
Origins of Etroubles date back to Roman period. It seems that this area was used for big military camps exploited by the Roman army heading towards the north Europe through Colle del Gran San Bernardo.
Strolling around Etroubles is a big pleasure, enjoying glimpses of wonderful corners with ancient houses built with stones and roofs made with huge wooden beams. Here you can find also tiny restaurants and bars where spend relaxing moments and taste local food. Very famous is Prosciutto Crudo di Saint Rhemy En Bosses a kind of cured meat that cannot be forgotten.
The wonderful bell tower of Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is older than the church which was built on the ruins of a very ancient tower. The stones from this tower were used for the church.
The interior of Chiesa di Santa Maria is very simple but large with a beautiful organ. Looking north from the back of the church (year 1815) it is possible see the gorgeous range of Mont Velan height 3727 meters.
