Corinaldo - Marche
Marche is a special Italian region, characterized by a gorgeous nature – sea and mountains – an intriguing history and tasty gastronomy. Furthermore numerous very ancient hamlets are scattered along this land, making this region unique.
Corinaldo is one of these villages. It is located in the Ancona district, and is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Some very ancient documents state that the origins of Corinaldo date back to year 400, when an invasion of enemies and consequent fire forced some people to flee, seeking refuge in the area where the village was later founded.
The village is characterized by fantastic defensive walls still perfectly maintained and 912 meters long. They date back to year 1367 when Corinaldo was practically rebuilt and have three main gates: Porta di Santa Maria del Mercato, Porta Nova and Porta San Giovanni.
Along the famous staircase, in the oldest part of the village, there is the well called “pozzo della polenta” (polenta well). The legend tells about a man who was carrying a big bag full of flour used to make the well-known polenta. He placed the bag on the edge of the well to have some rest, but fell with the bag into the water and lost all the flour.
The Palazzo Comunale – Town Hall – is also very famous and important. It was built between year 1784 and year 1791. Also worth visiting is Chiesa di San Francesco. This church dates back to 13th century, but it was completely rebuilt during the 18th century.
