Corenno Plinio - Lombardia
In the northern part of Lago di Como (Como lake) there is one of a kind hamlet named Corenno Plinio. It is gorgeous because is on the shore of the lake and still has very ancient but well refurbished buildings.
Corenno Plinio thus preserves its ancient charm and strolling through its alleys is a unique experience. Landscapes on the lake and its surrounding mountain ranges on the Switzerland border are also truly breathtaking.
The first evidences of the hamlet date back to Celtic era and then it passed under the rule of Roman empire. But the most interesting story of Corenno Plinio begins during the Middle Age, when its population built a castle for defensive purposes and the church for their religious identity.
The castle is characterized by two towers with perimeter walls which protected the population of Corenno Plinio during the enemy incursions. Do to the several battles occurred over the centuries, the castle was partially destroyed and rebuilt many times, and nowadays it is characterized only by the presence of the main structures.
The church of Corenno Plinio is called Chiesa di San Tommaso di Canterbury. Its façade is characterized by the presence of sepulchral arches and the origins of the church date back to XII century. Inside the church there are ancient frescoes.
