Colle Piccolo San Bernardo - Valle D'Aosta
After Mont Blanc tunnel, Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo (Little San Bernard pass) is the most important gateway to France. It is only open when there is no snow – last part of spring, summer, and the first part of autumn – and the view that you can enjoy from this place is truly gorgeous.
This area is very wide and surrounded by high mountains with an altitude of about 3000 meters. Furthermore, looking towards the Miage glacier, you can see the massif of Mont Blanc with its highest top.
Where nowadays there are astonishing and very high mountains, in ancient times there was an immense sea that divided Africa from Europe. We are talking about a period of 200 million years ago (Jurassic era) !
Then the progressive rapprochement between the two continents, caused the lifting of this immense area, generating the mountains that we can observe nowadays, shaped over the centuries by glaciers and grinded by water and gravity. An incredible evolution !
Fantastic paths start from Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo, which wind along gorgeous smaller valleys and climb to very high peaks where you can enjoy incredible landscapes (below are the images of some of them).
