Churches of San Leo - Emilia Romagna
A little village called San Leo, located in Emilia Romagna region, is characterized by the presence of two wonderful and ancient churches. One of these is Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta with a crypt positioned under the main floor.
It is the oldest church in the area of Montefeltro where the village stands and in the Medieval period – IX century – it was built on ancient parts of the Roman era. This Christian building is characterized by the absence of the façade with the main entrance door.
To access the interior of the church there is a door located on a side wall. The architectural structure is characterized by three naves. Furthermore the main altar is positioned above the floor and it can be reached by a central staircase.
The second church in San Leo village, is the Cathedral of San Leone. This is one of the most important Christian church of the Medieval era. Like the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, there is not the main door on the façade. Therefore you can access to the interior through a door located on a side wall.
The Cathedral dates back to the year 1173, and also in this case the interior is characterized by three naves and by the main altar built above the floor, reachable via a lateral staircase. This church also has a crypt under the main floor of the building, which has three naves.
The two churches are dominated by the mighty fortress of San Leo and they are encompassed by a wonderful natural environment. A place that will remain in your heart forever.
