Chiesa di San Nicolò and Cappella di Santa Barbara - Merano - Alto Adige
Merano is a little city (about forty thousand inhabitants) located in the north – east part of Italy, close to the border with Austria. It is merged in a fantastic environment surrounded by mountains and the city is characterized by the presence of very interesting monuments.
Among them it is worth visiting Chiesa di San Nicolò and Cappella di Santa Barbara. The first could be considered the most important church of Merano (it is the Duomo – Cathedral – of Merano). The latter was the cemetery chapel when in the past the cemetery was located near Chiesa di San Nicolò.
First written evidences of Chiesa di San Nicolò date back to year 1266 and over the centuries it was updated until the XVIII century. Its bell tower is one of the most important in Alto Adige region and it took three centuries to finish this building.
At the base of the bell tower there is an arch that allows you to reach the back of the church. Noteworthy is the side door of Chiesa di San Nicolò in gothic style. The interior of Chiesa di San Nicolò is in gothic style, with wonderful mosaic windows.
Cappella di Santa Barbara dates back the XIII century and it is located behind Chiesa di San Nicolò. Inside the building characterized by two floors, there are three altars (second floor). The central one is a very beautiful Altare a Portelle (altar with little doors). This dates back to the XV century and it has German origins. The ceiling of Cappella di Santa Barbara is particular because it is characterized by a “star” design.
