Chatel Argent Villeneuve - Valle d'Aosta
Villeneuve is a little hamlet in Valle d’Aosta region. It is located at the foot of a rocky hill on the top of which there are the ruins of an ancient castle, named Chatel Argent.
This castle dates back to the second half of XIII century and in the past it has always been a property of the powerful Savoia family. It was designed and used only for military purposes, also because it is in a strategic position overhanging Dora, the most important river of Valle d’Aosta. So Chatel Argent is a very basic structure with a big tower, and its location is fantastic, offering an awesome landscape over Valle d’Aosta.
Inside the walls of the castle there is the chapel which is being restored. It dates back to XI century and it is named Cappella di Santa Colomba.
The path that goes up to the castle has been carved in the rock, and it is named La Rampa. Along it there is Chiesa di Santa Maria one of the oldest churches present in Valle d’Aosta. It was mentioned the first time in an ancient document of year 1184 and it has been updated over the centuries. The church is encompassed by the graveyard of the Villeneuve village as asked by the Edict of Saint Cloud in year 1804 issued by Napoleon.
