Certaldo - Toscana

Would you like to experience a time machine and jump back to the medieval period ?

If you are after something like that and you want it to make your day, you cannot miss Certaldo village in Toscana region !

Origins of Certaldo date back to Roman and Etruscan era, and all the ancient objects found in this land over the years are now collected in Palazzo Pretorio.

But the first written evidences date back to the Medieval period and more precisely to the 1164 year, when in a document a castle called Certaldum was described.

Certaldo is also the birthplace of the famous poet Giovanni Boccaccio and the village is encompassed in an extraordinary environment. The hamlet was influenced by Firenze and also for this reason it has magnificent buildings still nowadays perfectly maintained and refurbished.

At one end of the main alley of the village, called Via Boccaccio, Palazzo Pretorio is located and it is absolutely worth a visit. This was the courthouse where the judge handled trails. Don’t miss also Chiesa dei Santi Tommaso e Prospero and Chiesa dei Santi Jacopo e Filippo with their wonderful frescoes.

Our stay was in B&B L’Antica Torre del Borgo, a wonderful B&B obtained from the refurbishment of a very ancient tower located very close to Palazzo Pretorio. We warmly recommend it if you want to spent some days in this enchanted hamlet.

Last but not least food and wine ! In Ristoranti and Osterie of Certaldo you can spend unforgettable nights, enjoying tasty local dishes. Furthermore Osteria del Vicario is worth a visit with its incredible view of the surrounding landscape.
