Cermine - Lombardia
Cermine is a little Alpeggio located in Valchiavenna a valley in Lombardia region very close to the Switzerland border. In Italian language Alpeggio means a little hamlet surrounded by pastures and used by shepherds during summer to shelter cows and goats in stables built with rocks and wood.
The habit of guiding animals from bottom valley to Alpeggi during summer and from Alpeggi to bottom valley during autumn was widespread in Italy until the seventies, but then gradually lost in the following years.
When Alpeggi fell into disuse, their little houses and stables remained uninhabited for several years, but then gradually refurbished by local people.
Nowadays Carmine is a fantastic tiny hamlet, with beautiful little houses made up with alpine material, such us wood and rocks. Something unbelievable!
It is located on a large meadow at an altitude of 1340 meter along the watershed between Val Pilotera and Valle della Forcola and of course it is surrounded by forests and dominates the last part of Valchiavenna.
The landscape from Cermine is staggering. Besides to see Val Pilotera and Valle della Forcola, it is also possible to observe Val Bodengo, Val Garzelli, and Val Pesciadello with their fantastic mountains.
Cermine can be reached via a mule track called Sentiero del Benefattore, used in the past by shepherds to get the Alpeggio, starting by Gordona a village at the bottom valley.
