Castello Savoia

Castello Savoia - Valle D'Aosta

Valle d’Aosta can be called the region of castles. Most of them have origins that date back to Medieval era, but some were built in the Savoia era.

Two of them are very important: one is called Castello di Sarre and the second is Castello Savoia. Sarre is the village where the building, renovated starting from 1879 by Vittorio Emanuele II is located. The Italian king and also his son Umberto I used the castle as headquarter for their hunting trips in the forests around the Gran Paradiso massive.

Margherita di Savoia, wife of Umberto I, didn’t want to spend her time in the Castello di Sarre with a bunch of rough men focused only to hunting trips. In the year 1899, she therefore decided to build a special residence where she could live in a more suitable environment.

These are the origins of Castello Savoia, located in Valle di Gressoney – Gressoney valley, the first one on right hand side when you go through Valle d’Aosta starting from the village of Pont Saint Martin.

From Savoia castle Margherita Savoia could enjoy a fantastic view of one of the largest glaciers in the Monte Rosa massive, the Lys glacier. Visiting this building is like diving into a fairy tale. It is so harmonious, beautiful and encompassed in a wonderful environment, a splendid forest.

On the ground floor you can admire a large entrance hall with columns and the dining room. From here you can get the first floor called “noble floor” via a gorgeous staircase made of durmast wood.

On the noble floor you can visit the rooms dedicated to the king Umberto I and the rooms dedicated to the queen Margherita di Savoia. The latter are the most beautiful with fantastic furniture and several photos and paintings of the time and of course they have the best position inside the castle.
