Castello Estense di Ferrara

Castello Estense di Ferrara - Emilia Romagna

Castello Estense is a real jewel embedded in Ferrara city – Emilia Romagna region. The castle dates back to year 1385, when Nicolò II d’Este was subjected to a strong pressure and he was in danger due to citizens of Ferrara who rose up under a strong famine.

During the following years Castello Estense di Ferrara was controlled by powerful nobles and families who competed each other’s for the domain of the city. In the year 1570 Ferrara was hit by a terrible earthquake and the castle suffered a lot of damages.

The castle was refurbished after the earthquake, but for this it lost much of its medieval characteristics especially for its rooms. In the course of year 1598 the powerful Estense family left the city of Ferrara, and put an ended to its domain over the castle which went under the domain of Stato della Chiesa.

In this period the castle was well maintained, but in the year 1634 and 1718 the building was hit by fire, and some furniture and artworks in its rooms were completely destroyed.

Due to the earthquake and fires, but also due to the political history of Estense family which was weakening, the castle of Ferrara lost most of its artworks which were kept in its rooms.

Nowadays Castello Estense located in the main square of Ferrara city and encompassed by a defensive moat, shows all its ancient beauty and looking at it you have the feeling of its majestic past.
