Doria Malaspina Castle - Liguria region
In Liguria region – district of La Spezia – there is a castle named Doria Malaspina, which overlooks the hamlet of Calice al Cornoviglio. This part of Liguria region is also called Lunigiana, where there are several castles owned by Malaspina, a powerful family of the Medieval period.
The hamlet of Calice al Cornoviglio is located in a savage part of Val di Vara. The first evidences of the castle dates back to XI century. It was under the dominion of Malaspina family since XIII century, but it was illegally occupied by Bishop Gualtieri di Luini.
The illegal occupation of the building was solved with a trial that gave the castle back to Malaspina family. Over the centuries the Doria Malaspina castle was under the dominion of several powerful families and from the early part of XX century it came under the control of Public Administration and used for cultural meetings and events.
The area where Doria Malaspina castle stands is really wild. It is encompassed by very dense forests, dotted by few little villages. This corner of Lunigiana and its environment deserve to be visited !
