Verrès castle - Valle D'Aosta
Are you fond of medieval castles ? Castello di Verrès is the one you are looking for ! It is located in Valle d’Aosta region and represents a true example of castle built for the unique purpose of defence against the threat of enemies.
It is a drop dead fantastic castle, well maintained and restored, especially in the internal parts where it has still his original style and structure. Looking at this castle you can understand the ingenuity and endeavour of people that designed and built it.
First evidences of Verrès castle date back to the year 1287, when some documents state that the owner of this building was the De Verretio family. But then during year 1390 the structure of the building was modified as it is nowadays, by the family Challant.
The castle is built on the top of a huge rocky spur overlooking the village of Verrès and the part of the main bottom valley. The building is characterized by a very simple square section and big external walls.
This rational structure was necessary for a good defence against the enemy threats. In the main internal part of the castle you can observe a nothing short of remarkable big staircase that starts from an internal courtyard where there is a well for collecting the rain.
On the ground floor there is the kitchen of the castle and some halls used by soldiers and as warehouses for weapons and stables for horses. On the first floor there are the rooms for the lords, obviously well cared and cosy for that period. On the second floor there are the servants’ rooms.
