Castello di Sarre - Valle D'Aosta
Castello di Sarre is located in the territory of Sarre, a little village few kilometres from Aosta – Valle d’Aosta region. More than a castle, Castello di Sarre is a fortress. Its origins date back to 1242 and in the year 1869 it was purchased by Re d’Italia Vittorio Emanuele II and then passed into the hands of his son and successor Umberto I di Savoia.
The two Italian kings had a huge passion for hunting. Therefore Castello di Sarre was updated becoming the king’s estate, where servitude took care of hunting trips, organized by the king and his friends hosted in the rooms of the castle.
These hunting trips took place mainly in Valle di Cogne, Valsavarenche and Valle di Rhemes, a vast territory known nowadays as Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso. Hundreds of servants where involved in king’s hunting trips, carrying everything necessary also for camping and staying in high altitude shelters.
The king’s favourite targets were ibexes, and especially by the will of Umberto I, the rooms on the first floor of the castle were decorated with skulls and horns, king’s hunting trophies.
In 1989 the castle was purchased by Valle d’Aosta region and completely restored. Its first floor is fantastic, and using several document of the time still present, the rooms has been perfectly rebuilt also with original furnitures. The second floor has less interesting furnishing, because these dates back to the first part of XX century and there weren’t enough documents to rebuild rooms with their original characteristics.
