Lago di San Grato - Valle D'Aosta
Close to the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo region, there is a magic place characterized by the presence of a fantastic castle called Castello di Rocca Calascio. The latter is a tiny village encompassed by a vast mountain range.
The castle is located on the top of one of these mountains at an altitude of 1464 meters and it is the highest Italian castle. Its structures are not in good condition, but its position and the surrounding environment make it an exciting place.
First evidences of the castle date back to year 1140 after the Norman conquest. Castello di Rocca Calascio was integrated into a big defensive system, designed to control a vast territory.
Its main update took place in the year 1480 when Antonio Piccolomini decided to build four towers and a wall with battlement around the main building. In the year 1703 the building was destroyed by a strong earthquake and during the following decades it was abandoned and fell into ruin.
Starting from 1980s the castle was partially refurbished and consolidated. Thanks to its ancient charm and the surrounding wild environment, it has often been used as set for famous movies such as Lady Hawke.
