Issogne Castle - Valle D'Aosta
The Issogne Castle is located in Issogne hamlet – Valle d’Aosta region. It is very close to the Dora Baltea, the main river of Valle d’Aosta and its structure is completely different from a classic castle. Therefore no towers and defensive walls with battlements.
Originally it was composed of several different buildings, then connected together over the years obtaining the current structure. The Issogne Castle was an estate of Challant family, very powerful in this part of Italy.
Ibleto di Challant at the end of XIV century and then Giorgio di Challant at the end of XV century, refurbished the building. Giorgio di Challant with his superb culture completed the internal part of the castle with fantastic frescoes, which can still be admired nowadays.
Among different wonderful rooms, inside the castle it is worth visiting at the ground floor the reception hall, with gorgeous frescoes and the coat of arms of Giorgio di Challant painted above the fireplace. The porches of the main courtyard are featured by frescoes that tell scenes of daily life.
Last but not least in the centre of the courtyard there is a fountain characterized by a metal pomegranate tree. It seems it was originally painted in wonderful colours.
